“I DON’Tmean to imply I lack trust,” Fremont argued, “but I think

Elden lied when he said he didn’t know Nia.”

“The name could be familiar,” Varun countered. They stood in

the front room of Sweet Sally’s brothel near the kitchen hallway. “He

did admit to attacking Nia at the party.”

“Only after you stirred the memory by directly asking.” Fremont

crossed his arms. “But it isn’t his answers, Varun. His eyes. They had

the look of knowing when he denied knowing.”

“Do you blame him for lying? Admitting to assault could mean

death for him.”

Fremont sighed softly, lowering his arms. “I know.”

“I plan to see Rana today,” Varun said, changing the discussion. “You know Rana won’t be alone. Going in during the day will get

you injured.”

“It won’t kill me.”

“Of course not.” Fremont chuckled. “But now isn’t the time to act

rashly.”

“He’s having one of his bi-monthly social gatherings. I plan to go

and have a little discussion with him. I’m not concerned about my

assignment as much as I’m curious to see what he has to say about

Elden.”

“Are you on the invited list for this one?”

“I can’t remember. I usually throw out any mail I get from him. I

have plenty of parties to attend which are far better.”

Fremont shook his head. “Ever the popular one, doll.” Varun glanced to Triste standing beside the door. He looked back

to Fremont. “We’re out of time to return the two. And we have no way

of returning them.”

“We can’t even contact the humans. It isn’t as simple as picking

up a phone and asking the operator for the king of Hendola in Senac.” “If only,” Varun whispered.

“I had the entire night to worry about the matter. If devils suffered

from scales appearing under stressful situations, I’d look like a fish.” Varun’s brow pulled together. “You think I look like fish?” “Just your arm,” Fremont teased.

“Splendid.” Varun smiled, amused.

“I’ll see what I can do, but I don’t think any devils I might

convince to take the two will actually return them.”

“Right now, worry about the party at Rana’s. I want you there as

my guest.”

“I’m flattered.” Fremont squeezed Varun’s arm. “We’ll sniff

around and find out what he’s doing with Sondosa.”

“That’s the plan. Then off to Sondosa herself. We’ll have this

sorted by dinner.”

“Optimistic.” Fremont sighed. “Aren’t you worried about what

Sondosa will do?”

Varun studied Triste’s back. “Vaguely. I can’t imagine she can do

much if we gathered the right information against her. If she’s acting on

behalf of STAR, we’ll run into trouble.”

“You think she’s doing this for herself?”

“I certainly hope so.”

The front door jingled, pulling Fremont’s and Varun’s attention.

Zephyr entered and stopped to converse with Triste. Fremont looked at

Varun.

“Tell me honestly, Varun.”

Varun removed his gaze from his butler and rival. “What are you

talking about?”

“Triste. Zephyr. Are you okay with it?”

“As far as I know, there isn’t an ‘it’ to be okay with.” Fremont smiled wryly. “In denial, love?”

“No.”

TRISTEcould feel Varun’s gaze on his back. He glared at Zephyr, ignoring the friendly greeting. “What are you thinking?” he snapped.

“I’m here on duty.”

Zephyr’s smile faltered but remained. “I’m aware. Let’s keep up

appearances, Triste. Try not to react.
